The Acropolis of Sparta has an ancient theatre and Byzantine remains on a hill above the modern town.
The Acropolis of Sparta rises above the modern town and holds the remains of an ancient theatre, a Byzantine church and fortifications, set among olive trees. The hill is less dramatic than the Athenian Acropolis, but it gives a good sense of ancient Sparta, which, unlike other Greek cities, was never surrounded by walls for much of its history. The ancient theatre, dating from the Hellenistic and Roman periods, still shows part of its seating, and the Byzantine church of Agios Nikon is also visible. The site is open and quiet, with paths through the olive groves and views over the Eurotas valley and the Taygetos mountains. Wear comfortable shoes and bring water and sun protection, since there is little shade. Allow about an hour. The Acropolis is a short drive from the centre and combines well with the Tomb of Leonidas and the Sanctuary of Artemis Orthia. Check opening hours.
