The Heraion of Perachora is an ancient sanctuary of Hera on a headland above a small harbour.
The Heraion of Perachora was a sanctuary of Hera on a small headland above a sheltered harbour, with remains of a temple, an altar and a water cistern. The setting is the main attraction: a small bay with clear water, pine trees on the slopes and the Gulf of Corinth beyond. The sanctuary was used from the eighth century BC, and the finds included votive offerings, pottery and models of buildings that tell us much about the architecture of the time. Today only the foundations remain, but the site is evocative and quiet. A short path leads from the parking area to the ruins, and the walk is easy but uneven. Combine the visit with a swim at the nearby coves or a stop at Lake Vouliagmeni. Wear sturdy shoes and bring water and sun protection. The site is often empty, which makes it a good choice for a peaceful visit.
