The old town of Kalamata has churches, markets and stone houses near the castle.

Kalamata’s old town lies below the castle and has churches, small squares, traditional shops and restored mansions, mixed with cafés and tavernas. It is the oldest part of the city and escaped some of the damage of the 1986 earthquake, which hit Kalamata hard. Highlights include the Byzantine church of the Holy Apostles, one of the oldest in the city, and the central market, with stalls selling olives, olive oil, figs and other regional products. Kalamata is famous worldwide for its olives, and the old town is the best place to buy them, along with local oil and sweets. The streets are pleasant for a leisurely walk, and many cafés have outdoor tables. Allow two to three hours, including a stop for lunch. The old town is easy to reach on foot from the railway station and the waterfront. Evenings are lively, particularly on weekends, with music and dining.
