Koroni Castle is a Venetian castle containing a monastery above the small town of Koroni.
Koroni Castle is a Venetian fortress on a promontory above the small town of Koroni, and inside the walls stands the active convent of Timios Prodromos. The fortress was built by the Venetians in the thirteenth century, and the Ottomans and others held it later. The walls, towers and gates are largely intact, and a path leads through the area inside, which holds gardens, houses and several churches. The nuns of the convent live in a quiet part of the complex and welcome visitors who respect the rules: dress modestly and avoid disturbing them. From the walls, the views over the Messenian Gulf and the town are lovely. The town of Koroni below has a harbour, a long beach and tavernas, so it is easy to combine the castle with a swim and lunch. The climb is short but uphill, and the paths are uneven. Wear sturdy shoes and bring water.
