The upper town on top of the rock has ruins of the fortress and the church of Agia Sophia.
The upper town of Monemvasia sits on the plateau on top of the rock and contains the ruins of the medieval fortress and the Byzantine church of Agia Sophia. A steep stepped path climbs from the lower town in about twenty to thirty minutes, and the effort is rewarded by wide views over the sea, the lower town and the coast. Little of the upper town remains standing, but the foundations of houses, cisterns, gates and fortifications show the extent of the former settlement. The plateau is exposed and has no shade, so bring water, a hat and sturdy shoes, and avoid the middle of the day in summer. The wind can be strong at the top. Allow about ninety minutes for the climb, the exploration and the descent. The visit is best in the morning or late afternoon, when the light is soft. Check the opening hours, as the gate to the fortress may close in the evening.
Around 20-30 minutes.
