Peristeria is a Mycenaean tholos tomb near Kyparissia.
Peristeria is a Late Bronze Age site near Kyparissia with a large tholos, or beehive, tomb, among the earliest and most impressive Mycenaean monuments in the area. The tomb dates from the sixteenth century BC and was part of a settlement that may have been an important centre before the palace of Nestor was built. Excavations by Greek archaeologists in the twentieth century revealed rich finds, including gold objects, weapons and seals, which are now displayed in the Archaeological Museum of Chora. The site is isolated and quiet, with olive groves around it, and it is rarely visited, which makes it appealing for people who like to explore off the main tourist trail. Wear sturdy shoes and bring water. The path from the road is short but can be overgrown. Check access conditions locally before you go. Combine the visit with Kyparissia Castle and a swim on the town’s long beach.
