Petalidi combines easy beach time with a walkable seafront, tavernas and a surprisingly rich historical background.
Petalidi is a seaside town in Messenia with a walkable promenade, tavernas and an organised beach, as well as a nineteenth-century Church of Panagia in the village. The bay is sheltered and the water is calm, which suits families. It is close to Kalamata and the beaches of western Messenia, and a practical stop on a coastal drive. The town has a relaxed, local character, with shops, cafés and tavernas serving fresh fish and local dishes. The promenade is flat and pleasant for an evening walk, and the beach has sun beds and umbrellas in summer. Petalidi is not as well known as some other places in Messenia, which means it is quieter and more affordable. The church of Panagia stands in the centre of the old village and is worth a brief visit. Dress modestly if you enter. Petalidi is a good base for exploring Koroni, Methoni and the surrounding countryside.
