Portello is a rocky swimming spot at the foot of the walls of Monemvasia.
Portello is a rocky swimming spot below the walls of Monemvasia, reached by a few steps from the lower town, with deep, clear water and no sand. It is one of the most atmospheric places for a swim on the Peloponnese, since you enter the sea right next to the medieval walls. There are metal ladders and platforms in some places, and the water is deep almost immediately, so it suits confident swimmers. There are no facilities, apart from a small area for sitting, so bring a towel and water. Wear water shoes, since the rocks can be sharp and slippery. Take extra care with children and keep them close, as the depth increases quickly. In summer, the spot can be busy in the middle of the day, so go early in the morning or in the evening. The sea can be rough in strong winds, in which case swimming is not advisable.
