The Temple of Zeus at Nemea is a partly restored ancient Doric temple in the Nemean valley.
The Temple of Zeus at Nemea is a Doric temple of the fourth century BC, partly reconstructed so that three columns stand tall in the middle of the sanctuary. It was the centre of the Nemean Games, one of the four great Panhellenic festivals, held every two years in honour of Zeus. In myth, Nemea was also the place where Heracles killed the Nemean lion as the first of his twelve labours. The temple stands among fields and vines, and the setting is calm and open. Around it you can see the foundations of other buildings, including the bath complex and the hostel for visitors. The site is easy to walk, with flat paths, but there is little shade, so bring water and a hat. Allow about an hour for the temple and the surroundings. The nearby stadium and museum complete the visit, and the wineries of Nemea are a short drive away.
