Nafplio is one of the most attractive towns in Greece and was the first capital of the modern Greek state from 1829 to 1834.
The town combines a neoclassical Old Town, narrow streets and Syntagma Square with the Palamidi fortress, the islet fortress of Bourtzi and the Arvanitia promenade. Museums include the Archaeological Museum, the Peloponnesian Folklore Foundation and the Komboloi Museum. Beaches at Arvanitia, Karathona and Tolo are nearby, and Tiryns and Mycenae are a short drive away.
It was the first capital of modern Greece.
Two to three days is ideal, including a trip to Mycenae and Epidaurus.
