Leonidio, Kosmas and Tyros Coast

A day on the east Arcadian coast: red cliffs of Leonidio, the mountain village of Kosmas and the beach of Tyros.

This day trip explores South Kynouria, one of the most distinctive corners of Arcadia. Begin in Leonidio, where red cliffs rise above the neoclassical houses of the town and attract rock climbers from many countries. Walk through the centre, then drive up the winding road to Kosmas, a mountain village with a stone-paved square, plane trees and running water, where the air is cool even in summer. Stop for lunch in a traditional taverna. In the afternoon, return towards the coast and finish with a swim at Tyros, a village with a long pebble beach and tavernas along the front. If time allows, add a short visit to Panagia Elona Monastery, high above the gorge. The roads are narrow and winding, so drive with care, and avoid the tour in bad weather. A car is necessary. Spring to autumn is the best period, with the sea warm enough for swimming from late May.
