The classic Argolis route: Nafplio’s Old Town, the Mycenaean citadel and the ancient theatre of Epidaurus.
This is the classic Argolid route and works well over one long day or, more comfortably, over two. Start with a morning in Nafplio, the first capital of modern Greece, walking through the Old Town, Syntagma Square and the harbour front, with the option of climbing to the Palamidi fortress. Drive north to Mycenae, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, to see the Lion Gate, Grave Circle A and the Treasury of Atreus, and visit the museum if time allows. In the afternoon, continue to Epidaurus to see the ancient theatre, famous for its acoustics, and the sanctuary of Asklepios. With two days, you can spend the evening in Nafplio and enjoy the tavernas. Wear comfortable shoes and bring water, a hat and sun protection, since the archaeological sites are open and hot in summer. Start early to avoid the heat and the crowds. The tour works all year, with spring and autumn the most pleasant.
Prices, opening hours and access can change, so check the official sources before you go.
