A wine and history day in Nemea, home of the Agiorgitiko grape, with the ancient stadium.
This day trip combines archaeology with wine in the heartland of Agiorgitiko. Begin at the Temple of Zeus at Nemea, where three reconstructed columns stand in a sanctuary that hosted the Nemean Games, and walk to the nearby stadium to see the vaulted entrance tunnel and the starting line. The museum explains the history of the Games and the sanctuary. After a morning among the ruins, move to the vineyards for lunch and tastings at one or two local wineries, where you can walk among the vines, learn about the production of red wine from Agiorgitiko and sample different styles. Wineries usually require booking in advance, and some serve meals. If you plan to taste several wines, arrange a driver or taxi. The route is best between spring and autumn, with the harvest in September and October the most lively period. Drink responsibly and do not drive after tasting.
