The stadium of Nemea was used for the ancient Nemean Games and has a restored vaulted entrance.
The stadium at ancient Nemea has a restored vaulted entrance tunnel through which athletes entered the track, and you can still see the starting line and the stone seating. It is a short walk from the Temple of Zeus and gives a vivid sense of how the Nemean Games were staged. The tunnel, dating from the fourth century BC, is one of the best-preserved elements, and athletes’ graffiti has been found on its walls. The track is about 178 metres long, and visitors can walk it, which many find a memorable experience. Every few years, a revival of the Games gathers runners from around the world, who run the stadium in ancient-style tunics. The site is open and sunny, so bring water and sun protection. The ground is uneven, and some sections of the stands are fragile, so follow the signs. Allow about thirty minutes, and combine with the temple and the museum.
