The Bavarian Lion is a large lion carved into rock in Nafplio, a memorial to Bavarian soldiers who died in the 1830s; it is free to visit.
The Bavarian Lion is a large lion carved into a rock face in Nafplio in the 1840s, in memory of Bavarian soldiers who died during the epidemics of 1833 and 1834, when Nafplio was the capital under King Otto. Otto, the first king of modern Greece, was a Bavarian prince, and he arrived in Nafplio in 1833 with soldiers and officials from Bavaria. The lion was designed by the Bavarian sculptor Christian Siegel and carved from the rock. It stands near the Pronia area, where the road reaches the coast. A short walk leads to it from the Old Town, and it is free to visit. The monument is a quiet photo stop with a small park and views of the sea. It combines well with the coastal paths near Pronia and with a swim at Arvanitia beach. Wear comfortable shoes and take care on uneven ground. The best light is in the afternoon.
