The ancient theatre of Epidaurus is famous for its acoustics and is still used for performances.
The ancient theatre of Epidaurus, built in the fourth century BC, is famous for its acoustics and near-perfect proportions, and it is part of a UNESCO World Heritage Site. A whispered word or a dropped coin can be heard from the top row, and visitors often test this for themselves. The theatre is attributed to the architect Polykleitos the Younger and could hold some fourteen thousand spectators. It is still used for performances during the summer festival, which is a different experience from a daytime visit. The stone steps are steep and uneven, so take care and wear shoes with good grip. The site is open to the sun, so go early in summer, and bring water and a hat. Allow about forty-five minutes at the theatre, or two to three hours if you also visit the sanctuary of Asklepios and the museum nearby. Epidaurus is one of the most visited sites in Greece, and the busiest hours are late morning.
Yes, during the Epidaurus Festival.
