The stone Karytaina Bridge crosses the Alfeios River and is a symbol of the village.
Karytaina Bridge is an old stone arch bridge over the Alfeios river, below the village and castle of Karytaina. Its arches and its setting among trees and rocks make it one of the most photographed sights in this part of Arcadia. For centuries the bridge was an important crossing on routes between the interior of the Peloponnese and the west, and its position beneath the hill of the castle fits naturally into the story of the village. You can see it from the road, but a short walk down gives better views from the riverbank. The ground near the water can be rough and slippery, so take care, particularly after rain, and keep away from the river when the water is high. The best time to visit is the morning, or the late afternoon, when the light on the stone is soft. It combines easily with a visit to Karytaina Castle and the village above, and with Megalopolis, about twenty minutes away by car.
