The Diolkos was an ancient paved trackway across the isthmus used to haul ships.

The Diolkos was a paved trackway across the Isthmus of Corinth, built in the sixth century BC, along which ships or cargo could be hauled between the two gulfs. This saved sailors the long and dangerous journey around the southern Peloponnese. A section of the stone-paved road, with grooves for wheeled carriages, can still be seen near the Corinth Canal. It is considered an early example of a transport system for heavy loads and was used for several centuries. The visit is short and free, and the site is usually combined with a stop at the canal. Information panels explain how the Diolkos worked. Wear solid shoes, since the ground is uneven, and be careful of traffic near the access road. If you are interested in engineering history, the Diolkos is a quiet and rewarding place, even though the remains themselves are modest. It is best visited in the morning or late afternoon, when the light is better for photographs.
