Larissa Castle stands on a hill above Argos with views of the Argolic plain; the hill has been fortified since antiquity.
Larissa Castle crowns the hill above Argos and has views across the Argolic plain to the sea. The site has been fortified since antiquity, but the visible walls are mainly Byzantine, Frankish and Venetian additions. The climb takes some effort, and a road reaches close to the entrance for those who prefer to drive, while a footpath climbs from the town. Inside, you can walk along the walls, see the remains of towers and cisterns and the small church, and enjoy the view in all directions. The castle is large, so there is plenty of space to wander. The ground is uneven and there is little shade, so bring water and wear solid shoes. The best time is the late afternoon, when the light is soft and the heat has eased. Check the opening hours before you go, since access can vary. Larissa combines well with the ancient theatre and the Archaeological Museum of Argos.
