Methoni Castle is a massive Venetian fortress with a causeway to a small sea tower.

Methoni Castle is one of the largest fortresses in the Mediterranean, built by the Venetians in the thirteenth century and later used by the Ottomans. It stands on a promontory at the southwestern tip of the Peloponnese, surrounded by water on three sides. A stone bridge with arches crosses the moat to the main gate, and inside the walls there is a large area of ruins, including churches, a Turkish bath, a Venetian warehouse and an octagonal tower called the Bourtzi, linked to the castle by a causeway. The scale of the fortress is impressive, and a walk around takes at least an hour and a half. Bring water, a hat and sunscreen, since there is little shade. The ground is uneven, so wear sturdy shoes. Beaches lie directly below the walls, so you can swim after visiting. The castle is especially photogenic in the late afternoon. Check opening hours, as they vary by season.
