Mystras is a UNESCO-listed Byzantine fortress-city on the slopes of Taygetos with churches, monasteries and palaces.
Mystras is a ruined Byzantine fortress city on the slopes of Mount Taygetos near Sparta, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Churches with frescoes, monasteries, palaces and houses climb the hillside, and from the top the Laconian plain stretches out below. The city was founded by the Franks in 1249 and became the centre of the Despotate of the Morea, the last great flowering of Byzantine culture, producing artists and scholars, including the philosopher Gemistos Plethon. Highlights include the Palace of the Despots, the churches of Agios Dimitrios, Pantanassa and Peribleptos, and the Brontochion monastery. There are two entrances, one at the top and one at the bottom, and visitors often enter at the top and walk downhill. The site is large and steep, so allow three hours, and wear sturdy shoes. Bring water, a hat and sun protection, and avoid the middle of the day in summer. Some buildings may be closed for restoration.
