Nemea is the home of Agiorgitiko, and many wineries offer tastings and tours.
Nemea is the heartland of Agiorgitiko, the red grape that produces many of the most popular Greek wines, and dozens of estates on the slopes around the town welcome visitors. Typical visits include a tour of the vineyards and cellars, an explanation of how the wine is made and a tasting of several labels, sometimes with local cheese, olives and bread. Agiorgitiko, whose name means St George’s grape, makes wines ranging from fresh and fruity to rich and age-worthy. The best time to visit is autumn, when the harvest takes place, though wineries welcome visitors for much of the year. Most estates require an appointment, so contact them in advance, and some offer meals. Plan for one or two wineries in a day, and arrange a driver or taxi if you intend to taste several wines. The wine region combines well with the Temple of Zeus and the stadium. Drink responsibly and do not drive after tasting.
