Gerakas is a sheltered fishing port on the east coast of Laconia, with a fjord-like inlet, tavernas and the ancient fortified city of Zarakas above it.
Gerakas is a sheltered fishing port on the east coast of Laconia, set in a narrow, fjord-like inlet with tavernas along the water. The hill above holds the remains of ancient Zarakas, a fortified city. Walk the waterfront, eat fish by the harbour and look at the natural shelter that protected sailors for centuries. The inlet is long and narrow, with steep sides covered in low vegetation, and the water is calm and green. Gerakas is a small place with a few houses and tavernas, and the atmosphere is quiet, particularly outside July and August. It is a good stop for lunch on a drive along the coast between Monemvasia and Kyparissi. The tavernas are known for fresh fish and seafood, and the prices vary. Roads to the port are winding and narrow in places, so drive carefully. Combine the visit with Monemvasia and Kyparissi, and allow time for a leisurely meal.
About 22 km, according to the official Visit Peloponnese page.
Yes, the village and harbour are free to visit.
