A day in Messenia: the large archaeological site of Ancient Messene and the city of Kalamata with its old town.
This day trip links one of the best-preserved ancient cities in Greece with the lively capital of Messenia. Begin at Ancient Messene, founded in 369 BC and surrounded by massive walls, where the Asklepieion, the theatre, the stadium and the Arcadian Gate give a sense of the size of the city. Allow at least two hours, and visit the museum on the same day. Return to Kalamata in the afternoon and walk through the old town below the castle, visit the central market for olives, olive oil and local sweets, and finish with a walk along the seafront. If time allows, add an olive-oil tasting at a local mill. Messene is quiet and sunny, so bring a hat and water. The tour is possible all year and suits families. For the best experience, start early in the morning at Messene and reach Kalamata for a late lunch in one of the tavernas.
Prices, opening hours and access can change, so check the official sources before you go.
