The medieval rock town of Monemvasia and the pale-sand beaches of Elafonisos.
This two-day tour combines the medieval rock of Monemvasia with the beaches of Elafonisos. On the first day, explore Monemvasia: walk through the gate into the lower town, along its main street to the square with Christos Elkomenos, and then climb the steep path to the upper town to see the ruined fortress and the church of Agia Sophia at the cliff edge. Swim at Portello or on the mainland at Gefyra and have dinner on the waterfront. On the second day, drive to Pounta and take the short ferry to Elafonisos, where you can spend the day at Simos or one of the quieter beaches such as Sarakiniko or Frangos. Check ferry timetables in advance and arrive early in summer, since queues for cars are common. The tour is best from May to October, and June and September offer warm sea and fewer visitors. Book accommodation ahead, particularly in July and August.
Prices, opening hours and access can change, so check the official sources before you go.
