Ancient Mantineia is an archaeological site near Tripoli with city walls, an agora and a theatre, in the Arcadian plain.
Ancient Mantineia lies in the wide Arcadian plain a short drive north of Tripoli, and it is best known for the great battle fought nearby in 362 BC, in which the Theban general Epaminondas was killed. The city was refounded in the fourth century BC with a circuit of walls strengthened by many towers, and a good part of that circuit can still be followed on the ground. The theatre, with its curved rows of seats, and the foundations of public buildings around the agora are the main remains. The site is open and exposed, with little shade, so bring a hat and water in warm months. Allow about an hour to walk between the monuments. Mantineia combines naturally with the sanctuary at Tegea and the archaeological museum in Tripoli, which shows finds from both places. Spring is the pleasant season, when the plain is green and the temperature is mild.
