The Menelaion is a hilltop sanctuary associated with Menelaus and Helen, near Sparta.

The Menelaion is a sanctuary on a hilltop near Sparta, associated in tradition with Menelaus and Helen, and the foundations of a Mycenaean mansion and later shrine can be seen there. The site sits on a ridge on the east bank of the Eurotas and has wide views over the valley and the mountains of Taygetos and Parnon. In the Archaic and Classical periods, the shrine honoured Menelaus and Helen as heroes, and votive offerings found there included many small objects. The remains are modest, but the setting is the main reason to come: the site is quiet, rarely visited and well suited to a peaceful hour. A short path leads from the parking area to the foundations and a stone monument. Wear sturdy shoes and bring water, as there is no shade. The site is a short drive from Sparta and can be combined with Mystras. Check access and opening hours before visiting.
