Mycenae is a UNESCO World Heritage citadel with the Lion Gate, royal grave circle and the Treasury of Atreus.
Mycenae is the hilltop citadel that gave its name to the Mycenaean civilisation, and it is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. According to Homer and later tradition, it was the seat of King Agamemnon, leader of the Greek expedition against Troy. The monumental Lion Gate marks the entrance, and inside you can see Grave Circle A, where rich burials were found by Heinrich Schliemann in the 1870s, and the remains of the palace on the summit. A covered passage leads down to an underground cistern, a remarkable piece of engineering from the thirteenth century BC. Outside the walls stand the great beehive tombs, including the Treasury of Atreus, one of the finest of its kind. The site is exposed, so bring a hat and water, and wear sturdy shoes for the stone paths. Allow two hours, and visit early or late in summer. The nearby museum is worth adding to the visit.
