Tiryns is a Mycenaean fortress near Nafplio, a UNESCO World Heritage Site known for its massive Cyclopean walls, built of huge stone blocks, and the covered galleries within them. It was a stronghold of the Bronze Age Argolid, and the walls are among the best-preserved Mycenaean architecture in Greece. According to myth, the walls were built by the Cyclopes, and Heracles was born or raised here. The citadel stands on a low hill in the plain, and from the top you can see the sea and the mountains. A ramp leads to the main gate, and inside you will find the foundations of the palace, the great megaron and the long stone-vaulted galleries. The site is open and exposed, so bring water and a hat, and visit early in summer. Allow about an hour. It is a short drive from Nafplio and combines well with Mycenae and Epidaurus. Check opening hours and prices before visiting.
