A Mani tour: Gytheio’s port, the tower houses of Areopoli and the Diros caves.
This tour introduces the Mani, the rocky, tower-studded peninsula in the south of the Peloponnese. Begin in Gytheio, the colourful harbour town that served as the port of Sparta, and walk to the islet of Marathonisi, where an eighteenth-century tower houses a museum of Maniot life. Continue south to Areopoli, the town where the revolt of 1821 began, with its old quarter of stone tower houses and the church of Taxiarches. Then drive to the Diros Caves, where a boat takes you through illuminated passages among stalactites and underground water. With a second day, continue to Vathia, with its cluster of towers, and to Cape Tainaron on foot. Roads are winding, so allow extra time, and drive carefully. The caves can be busy in summer, so go early. The tour works all year, but summer is hot and dry, and spring and autumn are more comfortable. Try the local specialities in the tavernas of Areopoli.
Prices, opening hours and access can change, so check the official sources before you go.
