A classic: Sparta’s modern town and the Byzantine fortress-city of Mystras on UNESCO’s list.
This one-day tour pairs the two most famous places of Laconia. Start early at Mystras, the Byzantine fortress city on the slopes of Taygetos, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, where churches with frescoes, the Palace of the Despots and the monastery of Pantanassa stand on a steep hillside. Allow about three hours and wear sturdy shoes, since the site is large, steep and exposed. In the afternoon, drive to Sparta, a modern town where little remains of the ancient city’s monuments. Visit the Archaeological Museum, which displays sculpture and votive offerings, see the statue of Leonidas in the centre and, if time allows, drive up to the acropolis and the Sanctuary of Artemis Orthia. Have dinner in one of the town’s tavernas. In summer, start at the opening time of Mystras, bring water and a hat, and avoid the midday heat. The tour works all year, with spring and autumn the most comfortable.
Prices, opening hours and access can change, so check the official sources before you go.
